Noam Chomsky, Morris Hale. Sound Pattern of English. New York, MIT Press, 1968.
The Sound Pattern of English (often referred to as SPE) is a foundational 1968 book on linguistics by Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle. It established the framework for generative phonology by arguing that speakers mentally apply formal, rule-driven processes to transform underlying, abstract sound representations into the actual phonetic forms we speak and hear.
